Thermodynamic Properties of Uranyl Minerals: Constraints from Calorimetry and Solubility Measurements

چکیده
More than 50 uranyl minerals, phases containing U as the uranyl UO2 2+ cation, and hydroxide, carbonate, phosphate, and silicate anions, H2O, and alkali and alkaline earth cations, occur in nature and as corrosion products of spent nuclear fuel. Despite their importance and the need to understand their thermodynamics to predict uranium solubility, fate, and transport in the environment, reliable thermodynamic data have only been available recently. This paper summarizes recent studies of enthalpies of formation using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry and Gibbs free energies from solubility experiments. Standard state thermochemical parameters (at 25 !C and 1 bar) are tabulated and the stability and transformation sequences of these phases are discussed. The enthalpies of formation from oxides are discussed in terms of crystal structure and Lewis acid!base interactions.

Thermodynamic properties of autunite, uranyl hydrogen phosphate, and uranyl orthophosphate from solubility and calorimetric measurements.
In this study, we use solubility and drop-solution calorimetry measurements to determine the thermodynamic properties of the uranyl phosphate phases autunite, uranyl hydrogen phosphate, and uranyl orthophosphate. Conducting the solubility measurements from both supersaturated and undersaturated conditions and under different pH conditions rigorously demonstrates attainment of equilibrium and yi...
متن کاملThermodynamic characterization of boltwoodite and uranophane: Enthalpy of formation and aqueous solubility
Boltwoodite and uranophane are uranyl silicates common in oxidized zones of uranium ore deposits. An understanding of processes that impact uranium transport in the environment, especially pertaining to the distribution of uranium between solid phases and aqueous solutions, ultimately requires determination of thermodynamic parameters for such crystalline materials. We measured formation enthal...
متن کاملAb initio study of the uranyl oxide hydrates: a proton transfer mediated by water.
We present a first-principles study of the UO(3)·n(H(2)O) uranyl oxide hydrates, namely, schoepite (n = 2.25), metaschoepite (n = 2) and dehydrated metaschoepite (n = 1.75), which appear as the alteration U(VI) products of aqueous corrosion of nuclear fuel. For these compounds, the calculated enthalpy of formation is in good agreement with calorimetry and solubility measurements. We discuss the...
متن کاملEvaluation of Barium Sulfate (Barite) Solubility Using Different Chelating Agents at a High Temperature
Barium sulfate (barite) is one of the widely used weighting materials in the preparation of drilling fluid for deep oil and gas wells. Barite is not soluble in the regular solvents; such as, hydrochloric acid (HCl) and other acids. Therefore, in this study, we focused on evaluating the dissolution of the industrial barite particles in different chelating agents. Chelating agents; such as, dieth...
متن کاملSeparation of Carbon Dioxide from Natural Gas by Matrimid-Based Mixed Matrix Membranes
Spherical MgO nanoparticles and Flake-like clay minerals modified with polyaniline (PAni) are applied in Matrimid in order to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) having improved gas separation performance. The CO2 permeability, CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2-induced plasticization pressure of MMMs are assessed at 4-30 bar feed pressure. The chemical structure, morphology and thermal properties...
